In more depth...

So what exactly is a Body Image and Online Skills Curriculum?

It's a resource that goes beyond online safety and breaks down the wellbeing risk factors associated with time spent online.

It's a curriculum that addresses the gap between the real world we live in and the fake one online - where we are spending more and more of our time.

Its objectives are to help every child: understand media and its impact on wellbeing; understand and celebrate their real diverse bodies;

learn how to conduct themselves online through positive digital relationships.

It covers areas such as: gaming, image editing and filters, eating disorders, bullying...

To help deliver these topics we use the story and characters from the book Don't Go Knocking at the Circus Door...

Reception and Year 1

For this age range the content centres around acknowledging that there is a difference between the real world and media.

Using games: edited matched pairs, spot the difference...

Helping children to learn from the outset that images can be and are often changed.

We look at how nature has lots of diversity in it and we use it to explore how, we too, are all different and that's normal.

Years 2 and 3

For this age range we start to look at the stories that we are told through the media. Is there a pattern to stories, films, cartoons etc? How does the media use exaggeration?

We use basic body maps and look at the functions of our bodies and the many jobs it does. We place value on them as our vehicle to achieving everything!

We look at self care and personal hygiene - using glitter germ awareness!

Teamwork crafts help forge relationships and assign team roles.

Years 4 and 5

Years 4 and 5_edited.jpg

We explore cyber bullying and good practice online and in app groups. We also look at how our information might be used by websites and how we can manage the information we receive.

We explore unique and wonderful bodies through comprehension exercises. We look at how we're all genetically different.

.

We acknowledge the real / fantasy divide in media and make our own visual/digital illusions.

Year 6

In the final year we look more closely at bodies and their role in our culture. How the digital world might give us skewed assumptions about bodies.  This covers topics such as eating disorders / puberty changes and social change / citizenship.

We use maths and percentages to look at the real world influences on our bodies and metabolism.

We bring together the subjects of body image and media in a project creating our own media.
